Kagiira Skills Development centre  Skilling Youth in Modern agriculture

Kagiira Skills Development Centre (KSDC) in Ishongoro, Ibanda district in partnership with with AVSI Foundation and the Kingdom of the Netherlands is skilling youths in modern agriculture and value addition value chains.

The 80 youth were drawn from the nine districts of Mbarara , Isingiro, Kabale, Ntungamo, Rubanda, Bushenyi , Ibanda , Kazo and Kiruhura.

They are undergoing an intensive residential program at the Centre for a period of 6 weeks after which they will be assessed under DIT, Ministry of Education and Sports.

The areas of focus are local chicken production, high value horticulture, and meat processing.

Under local chicken production, the youth are trained on how to produce local chicken at low cost through feeding based on the black soldier fly larvae.

On completion, some will be supported by the project to brood and sell high grade local chicks to farmers while others will be supported into egg production.

Under horticulture, the training is conducted by Holland Genentech the biggest horticulture seed company in Uganda. The focus will be on high value crops such as broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower and straw berries.

They are also trained in value addition such as making fruit jam, wines, salads etc.

Under meat processing, focus is on making beef and poultry cuts and packaging for sale, making sausages. Hamburgers, meat balls, etc . They are also trained in packaging for sell.

While launching the program on 11th August 2022 , the coordinator of the AVSI program in Western region Mr Turyahebwa Julius , assured the youth of the support to ensure that they start their own business enterprises and improve on their livelihoods.

He promised them of the high standard of training they were getting from the trainers who are highly rated at national level.

The trainees thanked KSDC and AVSI for selecting them for the program’.
